Since 1997, Jim Riley has been paving his own unique path in Nashville, Tennessee. As a performer, Jim has served as the longtime drummer and bandleader for Rascal Flatts. He has played over a thousand shows in sold-out arenas across North America. His television credits include The Tonight Show and the GRAMMY'S. His recording credits include artists such as Rascal Flatts and Brian McKnight. He has also performed with Carrie Underwood, Gary Allan, Vince Gill, Mark Chesnutt and Jessica Simpson, to name a few. Jim was voted Best Country Drummer by the readers of Drum! magazine three years in a row. As an educator, Jim is in demand as an international clinician. He was voted Best Drum Clinician by the readers of Modern Drummer magazine. In 2007, he opened the doors to his teaching studio, The Drum Dojo, where he teaches percussion classes and private lessons. Jim also keeps busy as a freelance producer creating music for clients all across the U.S.
Jim was born in Boston, Massachusetts and, from an early age, exhibited exceptional musical talent. He began his formal studies as a percussionist at age 12, the same year he began singing with the Youth Pro Musica Choir. In high school, Jim began his studies with Boston Symphony Orchestra percussionist, Arthur Press. In addition to participating in his school's band program, Jim was also performing with the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble. He was also elected to All State his final three years of high school.
Upon graduation, he attended the University of North Texas, where he earned a degree in Music Education. During his tenure at UNT, he studied drums with Ed Soph, and timpani with the Dallas Symphony's Kal Cherry. Jim was also heavily involved with their internationally-acclaimed jazz program, as well as performing in the top orchestra, wind ensemble, and percussion ensemble at the university. In the area of marching percussion, Jim performed with the UNT drumline, which won five national championships during his tenure. He also played in the Drum Corps International Finals as a member of the Velvet Knights Drum and Bugle Corps.
